Sun makes a nice change…

Dare I hope that yesterday and today are semi-indicative of the weather in London from here on out? While it's been fairly chilly both days, it has been mostly sunny which makes a nice change from the wet and grey days we've been having…

As an aside- My friend Lawrence, knowing of my immense fascination with London weather, informed me that this May has been the rainiest in his memory. I have no scientific evidence to support this (I'm currently too lazy to Google it and find out), but I trust his judgement. I can only hope that June will be both warmer and sunnier.

Looks like the ATM thieves have struck again!

31 May 2006 at 5.04 pm | In wtf? | Leave a Comment

Personally, if I were a member of a law enforcement unit in Washington, Westmoreland or Somerset Counties I'd be looking for a new job. Obviously they are having a bit of difficulty tracking down the person or people responsible for the rash of ATM thefts that have occurred over the past 2 months. The latest ATM theft had a new element- the perpetrator took the phone card machine, as well.

This is just getting ridiculous, although I do heartily chuckle out loud (usually in the LSE library) each time I read that another ATM has been yanked out of a convenience store and strapped onto the back of a truck. A word of advice for all convenience store owners and workers in the Western PA region- buy a shotgun and don't be afraid to use it. I guarantee that the thieves would think twice about their caper if the very real threat of bodily (or vehicular) injury was present. Because clearly the threat posed by local law enforcement isn't doing much to scare them.

Dan and I were in our friendly neighborhood Kingsway Starbucks (otherwise known as 'my second home') when he noticed Ms Lewinsky enter with an unidentified female friend. Lewinsky proceeded to order what looked to be two grande hot chocolates with whipped cream while her friend saved some seats near the back of the seating section. Other than the terrible black leggings peeking out from under her dress, she looked quite good, I have to say. I'll leave my disgust of the leggings trend for another time because that's an entire post in and of itself…

Today it was 90 degrees and sunny! … in Pittsburgh

Yes folks, that's right- it was a hot and sunny Memorial Day in the Burgh. Here in London, where it was Spring Bank Holiday, it was a chilly 56 and partly cloudy. At least it didn't rain.

Perhaps God helped him out…

pat robertson is delusional.jpg

Pat Robertson has claimed that he leg-pressed 2,000 pounds. Pardon me if I find this a little difficult to believe. Couple of reasons for my skepticism: 1) It's Pat Robertson, people! Here's a little insight into his view of women- (T)he feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians." (source); 2) It's still Pat Robertson, people! I don't really think my argument needs any further evidence on which to stand, but here you go anyway. Pat's take on who happens to be responsible for the persecution of Christians in the US- "Just like what Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to the evangelical Christians. It's no different. It is the same thing. It is happening all over again. It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-based media and the homosexuals who want to destroy the Christians. Wholesale abuse and discrimination and the worst bigotry directed toward any group in America today. More terrible than anything suffered by any minority in history." (source)

According to the same article that reports Pat's supposed feat of strength (at the ripe old age of 73, no less), "CBS SportsLine.com called the 2,000-pound assertion impossible" and stated "that the leg-press record for football players at Florida State University is 665 pounds less." Yeah, 700 Club Pat leg-pressed more than some ginormous college football players? Methinks not so much.

But what do I know? Perhaps Pat isn't the bigoted, racist moron he comes off sounding like and actually has a direct line up to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Maybe this was God working through Pat… Somehow I doubt it, just like I doubt that Robertson leg-pressed anywhere near 2,000 pounds. More like 200, if he was lucky and ate his Wheeties that morning.

ATM theft update!

 ATM

The thieves have moved from Washington County to Westmoreland County! I guess there are only so many ATMs per county that can be assessed as 'easy to steal' and it was time to move to fresh hunting grounds.

Looks like for now I'm sticking with 'brilliant' as my vote about this particular burgling strategy.

Where’s the honey?

 mcnuggets     honey

I ate lunch at McDonald's today. I ordered Chicken McNuggets as the main selection in my Value Meal and after paying the cashier, he asked me if I'd like any sauce with my meal. Of course I said I'd like some honey, because that's obviously the only appropriate choice of sauce when consuming McNuggets whether you're 3 or 23. The cashier looked at me oddly and asked if I wanted honey-mustard. 'No, I'd like honey.' Looking confused, he consulted someone I imagine was his boss, then informed that honey was not an option. I'm sorry, what? No honey? How is that even possible? OK, fine… I'll just have ketchup for my fries, then. Luckily, that request was granted, though I only got one measly packet.

I found out a few minutes later, as I was whining to Dan about the ridiculous lack of honey, that this sauce is not offered in the UK. He claimed he'd never seen honey in any of the McDonald's he's been in… Well, to this I have to say a big, fat BOOOOOO. I grew up eating McNuggets with honey at the Wexford Micky D's (and any other US McDonald's, for that matter) and I have to say that they were no where near as satisfying as I had been imagining simply because of the lack of appropriate sauce.

And because I get fixated on completely random tidbits, I googled the words "McDonald's", "Chicken McNuggets", and "honey" and found that I was not, in fact smoking crack when I proclaimed honey as a perfectly normal McNugget dipping sauce. Both Wikipedia (in their entry for Chicken McNuggets, of course) and McDonald's own US website (under their 'Bag a Meal' option) confirm that honey does exist as a dipping option. Apparently just not in Britain.

How does one decide to steal an entire ATM?

26 May 2006 at 3.49 pm | In wtf? | Leave a Comment

I can't decide whether these thieves are really brilliant or really stupid. Apparently, there has been a spate of ATM thefts in Washington County, PA. Yes, folks- these thieves are wrapping chains around the entire ATM and then driving away with it. Here's my dilemma: On the one hand this is a brilliant way to get around having to slyly nab card and PIN numbers, but at the same time it's quite stupid because 1) you'll look a tad conspicuous driving down the road and 2) if you get caught it's just a little hard to explain why you have a stolen ATM in your living room. 'Well, you see officer, my friend asked me to store this for him. I had no idea it wasn't legally his…' Yeah, I doubt that's going to fly, but hey- give it a go.

Right now 'brilliant' is winning in my assessment of the situation since this has happened several times over the past few weeks and no one has yet been caught. Then again, it is Washington County, more commonly known as WashPa, and a place full of special, special people. That's all I'm saying.

I have a confession…

I like cheesy pop music. There. I said it. I absolutely love 'artists' like Jesse McCartney, Ashley Parker Angel (of O-Town fame), Ryan Cabrera, Ashlee Simpson, Jessica Simpson, old-school Britney, Mandy Moore, plus random 80s stuff like Paula Abdul (Straight Up!), Mili Vanili (Blame it on the Rain, anyone?) and, of course, the iconic early 90s music of Donny, Danny, Joey, Jonathan and Jordan- more commonly known as New Kids on the Block.

I'm listening to internet radio and Jesse McCartney's 'Beautiful Soul' followed by Ashley Parker Angel's 'Let U Go' came on and well, I felt the need to share my love of cheesy pop (not to be confused with Dirty Pop, of course). Yeah, that's about it for now…

The Da Vinci Code

The Da Vinci Code Movie- Are you kidding me?

How can you make such a dull and lifeless movie from such an intriguing and entertaining book? I know most movies adapted from books aren't nearly as good as the original book, but somehow adaptations of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings series have managed to remain true to the books without losing any of the excitement inherent in their pages. Not so with Da Vinci. With the all-star cast and Ron Howard as director it's quite hard to grasp how this movie fell so short.

It started promisingly enough with the grisly murder of the Grandmaster of the Priory and immediate involvement of Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tatou) in the case. However, it quite quickly became rather cliched and somewhat slow-paced. There was pretty much no chemistry between Hanks and Tatou and Hanks seemed very mechanical, almost uncomfortable, in his role. The only saving graces of this drawn-out, seemingly interminable affair were the amazing soundtrack and British actors Ian McKellen and Paul Bettany as, respectively, Sir Leigh Teabing (a Grail expert) and Silas (an albino Opus Dei monk).

Christians shouldn't be worrying about the supposed anti-Christian message of this movie- no one will be awake long enough to be influenced about the supposed cover-up of Jesus and Mary Magdalene's child by the Catholic Church.

Despite being distinctly underwhelmed, it's one of those movies I'm glad I saw anyway because everyone is going to be talking about it for weeks to come. At least now I can make knowledgeably snarky comments about this two and a half hour monstrosity.
